The researcher conducted
the research at SMPN 2 Sedati Sidoarjo.
The purpose of this research was to observe the implementation of “manga” media to
teach reading narrative text for the ninth graders. Teaching reading is a complex
and challenging activity, because reading is a kind of activity to comprehend
the writers’ ideas. It needs a good experience, strategies and background
knowledge from the reader itself to deal with the text. In this research there are three questions to be
answered, they
are: 1. Can “Manga” media be
implemented to teach reading narrative text for ninth graders of SMPN 2 Sedati? 2. How are the students’
responses toward the implementation of “Manga” media for teaching reading
narrative text? 3.
How
is the students’ reading comprehension after being taught using “Manga” media?
To answer the problems above, the research used descriptive qualitative research to obtain all information about the implementation of “Manga” media. The data were taken from the result of interview and students’ task during the teaching learning. To prove the result of this research, the researcher was also asked triangulator to give opinion and suggestion about the result of the implementation of “Manga” media for teaching narrative text in 9H SMPN 2 Sedati. The source of the data was class 9H at SMPN 2 Sedati Sidoarjo. The class contained of 30 students, 15 were males and another were 15 females.
The result of the study showed that “Manga” can be implemented to teach reading narrative text for ninth grade students. They were also giving good responses toward the implementation of “Manga” media. After the implementation of “Manga” media; the students’ score got better from the first meeting until the last meeting. Because “Manga” is always presented in a single episode, the researcher suggested for teachers and further research to choose an appropriate type of “Manga” based on the ability of the students so that they will not find difficulties in understanding it.
